5M's of Managing Diabetes HealthWritten by Derrick Askew
Let’s face it one of life’s many pleasures is eating. When you have diabetes it doesn’t mean that you can’t eat what you love, it becomes all about how much you eat, how often you eat, and the quality of the food that you eat. Above all, you should enjoy your meals…and when you do eat – your focus should be on eating and enjoying that life’s pleasure and nothing else.
When you listen to the wisdom of your body it will tell you what you should eat. For most of us, we may have lost touch with that communication. In addition, it will signal you when you’ve had enough food. Staying conscious during eating, and only focusing on eating will allow that signal to grab your attention. Body hunger is completely different from head hunger.
Meals – learn how one of life’s many pleasures doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure, but a healthy pleasure- as you enjoy every bite of food.
Meals – learn about the food choices that are good for your diabetes, and your taste buds.
learn how to balance healthy eating, and eating for enjoyment; while maintaining healthy blood sugars.
Learn how to have your cake and still be 80-120 too!

AboutWritten by Derrick Askew
Mary Costa RN BSN CDE CDTC
Mary Costa, a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator has worked in the field of diabetes for over 25 years. She works exclusively with Adults who have prediabetes and diabetes teaching evidence based curriculum from National Diabetes Organizations, as well as Holistic and Integrative Nursing Associations. Mary is also the president and CEO of “Transform Your Diabetes Health” an online organization which offers education and coaching for people with prediabetes and diabetes. The strategies she utilizes includes Allopathic, Holistic and Integrative health practices.
Mary has worked with diverse populations, across all walks of life, and loves the challenge of making complex information easy to understand, with clear, and “do-able” action steps. Mary has seen what works, and what doesn’t, and recognizes that living with, and managing prediabetes and diabetes is not a sprint, but a marathon. Scientific evidence and studies shows that "preventing diabetes" and improving diabetes health is the real goal, and the key to living a healthy life enjoying what you love to do.
Mary and her work peers conducted a research project that evaluated the care of diabetics in groups, as opposed to one-on-one visits in the mid-1990s, and the results were published in Diabetes Care, December 1999. As a result of the research project, the program was implemented in all of the Northern California regions of the HMO she worked for. Mary has lectured internationally on diabetes, prediabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction. Mary is also a best selling author.
Mary received her Nursing degree in the 1980’s, has been a Certified Diabetes Educator since 1990’s, and recently achieved her CDTC (Certified Diabetes Technology Clinician) designation in 2013. Mary belongs to the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the American Diabetes Association, American Holistic Nurses Association, and is a member of the Experts Industry Association.
"I know that managing diabetes is not a sprint but a marathon, that takes time, education and practice, and that is what we provide to those to who wish to achieve a healthy high quality of life."
